The sentence in a book is "Los mejores nadadores bajaron hasta las raices mas hondos." and i was unsure of the meaning without knowing the meaning of "las raíces"

I think that las raíces is plural of la raíz, which means root or origen. Perhaps your phrase could be translated "The best swimmers went down to the deepest roots."

Actually, it should probably "to the deeper roots", not "deepest roots". - leilak, MAR 17, 2010
i think the first one was correct. - ismarodri_uy, MAR 18, 2010
And the sentence probably was: "Los mejores nadadores bajaron hasta las raíces más hondas." "raíces" is femenine so as its adjective. - ismarodri_uy, MAR 18, 2010
