How to change to the impsersonal se, if the original verb is imperfect tense

To change a statement into the impersonal se, you just do se + that verb in third person form. But what do I do if the statement is in the imperfect tense??
The Statement: La gente pensaba que su padre, el rey, era bondadoso y generoso.
So do I still just do se + pensar in the third person form? Or do I do something else?
