Generally speaking, in Spanish "la iglesia" is understood as the Roman Catholic Church. To be more clear, "la iglesia católica" is the full term.
For example: "The Roman Catholic Church is an important part of everyday life for many Mexicans" - "La iglesia católica juega un papel importante en la vida cotidiana de muchos mexicanos."
