how would i tell someone that they are very pretty/beautiful? is it "tu esta muy bonita?"

You would not use estar, you would use ser.
However, if you were to use Estar you should note that "tú" does not have the form of "está" but instead "estás." Studying your conjugation tables is important for proficiency as the distinction is important.
There are two reference articles here, one by the site and one by lazerus. Unfortunately I do not know how to locate Lazerus's guide.
Using the site's article Ser y Estar you would see that the Accronym for Ser is "Doctor" which stands for Description, occupation, characteristic, origin, and relationships.
Following that you'll note that bonita would fall into either description or characteristic, and you would use ser.
If you are going to use tú then the statement would be "eres muy bonita."
If you were to used usted then the statement would be "es muy bonita usted."
(and as the person before me noted, you could use tan as well.)
