Thanks. I just spent 8 days there and none of the locals knew either. Have to list it as one of those things.
It is also the name of a river, so it is probably a word in one of the indigenous languages--probably Mayagna or Miskito--that was used before the Spanish arrived. I think "cua" is used in children's picture books to mean "quack".
Good question because Wikipedia doesn't know either.
