I have a co worker whose first name is Ilmalis, I would like to know the proper pronunciation and if it has an English equivalent.

When it comes to names, the way the person pronounces it himself is usually the best way to pronounce it.
It reminds me of the way movie celebrities used to affect the stress on their name to make it sound foreign or more cultured. My name is not Sherry, it is Sherí.
My name is Quentin. I pronounce it Quent-in. The more proper way would be to pronounce it Quen-tin. I have an aunt that pronounces it properly and it makes me pause whenever she calls me by name. Everyone else pronounces as I do. I believe that when you introduce yourself everyone accepts your pronunciation of your name as well as whether you like to be addressed as Rob, Robbie, Robert, Bob, Bobby, etc.
