Whether at the beginning, middle, or end of words, it sounds in Spanish like the English th in thank, cathedral, tenth. Latin words terminating in x take z in Spanish, as lux, luz; velox, veloz. In the plural and in compound words it is superseded by c, as paz makes paces, pacífico, apaciguar.
