se pronuncia como en castellano al principio de las voces. y en este caso se la considera en inglés como letra consonante. Cuando está al fin de las palabras se pronuncia como i castellana pronunciada rápidamente, y en este caso se la considera como vocal. También se halla la y en medio de algunas voces de derivación griega, como en hydraulics, la hidráulica; hypothesis. hipótesis, y entonces se pronuncia como el diptongo ai castellano.
