u [oo] is the twenty-second letter in the spanish alphabet and fifth of the vowels; it loses its sound after q and g, and becomes a liquid, except where it is followed by an a, as in gauarismo, or when marked with a diaresis, as in agüero, when it retains its proper sound. The letters b, v, and u were formerly used as equivalent to each other in writing or printing.
A disjunctive conjunction used in the place of o, to avoid cacophony (before o or ho), as, plata u oro, silver or gold; víctima u holocausto, a victim or a holocaust.
