Se pronuncia en general como en castellano. La r sola se pronuncia muchas veces como rr, y las dos rr como una r sola. A la sílaba er, cuando es final, se le da el sonido de ar o or, como si estuviera sola y separada de la dicción; desire (desaiar); digger (digguer). Como abreviatura, R quiere decir rey o real, o en las recetas de los médicos, recipe, esto es, toma.

When ab and ob are not prepositions, as in abrogar, obrepci?the r becomes liquid; as in abrojo, obrero. —R in the middle of a word, or between two vowels, has a very smooth sound; as in morosidad peregrinar. The harsh and rough sound of r between two vowels, in the middle of simple words, is always expressed by double rr; thus, barraca, correcto.R is used as a contraction of reprobar, like A for aprobar, in voting for degrees in universities; it is also used as a contraction for real, royal, and for reverendo, reverend.
