Folletines were originally popular serialized stories that appeared in newspapers and magazines in the 19th and early 20th centuries, often before being published as novels. They usually covered familiar themes such as unrequited love, adultery and family relationships. Nowadays, the word folletín can refer to radio or TV serials and soaps, radionovelas or telenovelas, and people even use folletín figuratively to talk about any long-running story or intrigue.
