The Spanish Documento Nacional de Identidad is a laminated plastic ID card which is renewable every 5 or 10 years in most cases, depending on the age of the holder. All Spanish nationals over the age of 14 are required to carry this card bearing their photo, a fingerprint and personal details at all times. As a legal document it is commonly used as proof of identity and it can be used instead of a passport for travelling around the EU. In Spain it is commonly known as the DNI, or else the carnet (de identidad). In Latin America a similar card is called the cédula (de identidad).
