Subjunctive to indicate disagreement

Hello all,

This was just a thought I had about the subjuctive the other day and I was wondering if it was correct or not.

(I have used the form americanos here because it can refer to many nationalities and therefore hopefully won't cause offence.)

My question is this: If the person who is reporting this statement disagrees with the notion that the thieves were Americans, would it be possible to use the subjunctive?

Therefore:

All answers welcome
Thank you

It is not correct in Standard Spanish. The subjunctive here is only acceptable in negative and interrogative sentences. If they think or believe, then you are, by definition, using indicative.

I agree with Lazarus...when it is indicated that there is 'no doubt' you need to use the indicative
