I think the answer would be vary by region, social level, personal taste, etc. just like it does in English.

I've read things like Diga or Habla

Hi leo, veno'? Would that be "bueno"?

In Spain we say: Hola; dígame; ¿quién es?

Quentin, I have not heard "habla" unless you mean: Habla Lola, ¿quién llama'

En México lo mas común es decir; ¿bueno?

En Estados Unidos, algunos latinos decimos: hello? Aunque toda la conversación sea en español.

Most Colombians (and Venezuelans) say "Aló" when they answer the phone.

And as Lazarus said "Aló" sounds halfway between "Hello"(English) and "Allô (French). ("Aló" suena a medio camino entre "hello" (inglés) y aló (francés).)

There are so many options in Spanish but in English these days nobody really says anything except Hello? Unless you are calling a business of course.. or if you are really pretentious.
