What exactly is the question? YOu are using the verb correctly. I believe that you can also use it to say "becomes" with emotions. Por ejemplo, "Me pongo triste."

I am putting on my jacket....me estoy poniendo mi chaqueta ,in Guatemala chaqueta would be chumpa, me estoy poniendo mi chumpa.
