I wrote Caballeros y Damas because that is the way I saw it written online. In English , we would say Ladies and Gentlemen (because the Ladies are always address first), but Spanish is a bit more male oriented (Father's last name first, etc.). I thought caballeros y damas might be a cultural usage. Do you know which is correct> ..y damas or damas y...?

In Spanish you'd definitely write:

Damas y caballeros:

No one would ever write "Caballeros y damas".

Notice that both "damas" and "caballeros" must be written in lower case.

In our culture, a woman can give her children her surname before the father's, if she wants (a close friend of mine in Spain did). In your culture, children have ONLY their father's surname, and even women take the male's surname (which it is unheard of in our culture, where they keep their maiden's surname).

Surely you're not using that fact as an argument to call my culture male oriented, right? Because English culture is, in this respect, A LOT more male oriented than ours. How many English speaking friends do you have whose children have their mother's surname first, her father's one second, and her mother keeps her maiden surname after a catholic marriage'

La cultura mexicana aún es muy machista aunque las cosas ya están cambiando... los hombres ya lavan trastes, cambian el pañal al niño... ya "dejan" que la esposa trabaje... pero siempre por caballerosidad se ha dicho damas y caballeros aunque en otras situaciones pues sí sucede que por costumbre se nombra primero a los hombres.... los niños se forman por aquí y las niñas por allá nótese además que los niños van aquí y las niñas allá. Esto último también comienza a cambiar pero todavia falta.
