In "La zapatera prodigiosa" Lorca uses the expression
"Por la primavera blanca"

I read this as "in the spring", but I would be pleased if a member could explain the significance of the adjective "blanca" in the phrase.

"in the spring", means en la primavera.

"Por la primavera blanca" would mean forthe white spring.
but in this case it might mean about the white spring or around the white spring.

I have never read the novel so, I cant tell what the writer meant by primavera blanca
if you want to send more details, I´´ try to help you.

To amplify the text slightly, Lorca wrote

"Cuando fuiste novio mío
Por la primavera blanca,
los cascos de tu caballo
cuatro sollozos de plata"

Hope this will help

A google search shows that there's a collection of stories by Aurora de Albornoz with this title, "Por la Primera Blanca." "White Spring" is obviously symbolic; maybe someone from Spain can give us more insight.

My attempt (admittedly not very poetic in translation):

When you were my boyfriend
During the white spring,
The hooves of your horse
[Were] four sobs of silver.

Thank you Natasha

I have translated it as

"When you went away my lover
In the 'something' spring
The hooves of your horse
Were four silver sobs

Las manos de mi cariño
te están bordando una capa
con agremán de alhelíes
y con esclavina de agua.
Cuando fuiste novio mío,
por la primavera blanca,
los cascos de tu caballo
cuatro sollozos de plata.
La luna es un pozo chico,
las flores no valen nada,
lo que valen son tus brazos
cuando de noche me abrazan,
lo que valen son tus brazos
cuando de noche me abrazan.

I found this translation online (links.jstor.org, but I'm having trouble linking to it):

When you were my Sweetheart
Along toward white spring
Your horse's hooves
Were four silver sobs.

I think this is more of a poetry thing than a language translation issue. Remember, the poet is trying to create an image, and the word white creates an image of a Spring so new that there is still snow on the ground, and carries connotations of newness, coldness, and innocence. Don't hurt yourself attempting a literal translation--the poet needs syllables to make the verse scan.

It just means to have the write number / rhythm of syllables in each line.

Is that what they mean by keeping time? Do you know an easy way to explain what they mean by time or beat in a poem? Sorry about the question most of my school subjects were on science.

Here is a simple explanation of poetic meter. You need PowerPoint Viewer to see it, though.
