Traffod moved to Washington D C to work as a researcher for National Geographic magazine.
I don' like the sentence below, too complicated , too long,is there a better way to translate this.
Trafford se mudo a Washington D C para trabajar como investigadora de la revista National Geographic magazine. Should, I translate National Geographic into Spanish? What is the rule about proper names, should one changed the name of a business or organization into the language the whole paragraph is being translated'

It's a correct translation:
Trafford se mudó a Washington D.C. para trabajar como investigadora de la revista "National Geographic". magazine.
In my opinion i wouldn't change the proper nouns (for specific people, places, or things).

En España solo decimos Washington, sin DC.
National Geographic se usa tal cual.

Then what do you say if you're talking about Washington State?
