try Gabriel Garcia Marquez, he's from Colombia, he has some good novels, you can look it up. Hope other people can provide you more famous authors and novels in the spanish speaking world cuz I am very interested too.

A couple from Spain:

Carlos Ruiz Zafón (search on Amazon if you want to see his books)
Benito Pérez Galdós, Los episodios nacionales (thanks, Lazarus!)

Don Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes (novela)
Lope de Vega and Pedro Calderón de la Barca (teatro)
Ana María Matute (prosa)
Garcilaso de Vega (poesía)
Lazarillo de Tormes (novela picaresca)
I suggest to buy an anthology of Spanish literature.

Pío Baroja - one of Hemingway's main influences. "El árbol de la ciencia", "Memorias de un hombre de acción"
Juan Ramón Jiménez - "Platero y yo".
José Ortega y Gasset - "La rebelión de las masas"

I can tell you easily over 50 writers. How many do you need? What style do you prefer? What kind of stories are you into? Do they have to be modern writers'

muchas gracias Lazarus por todos los livros. i think i have to start by mordern writers because the language will be easier , the old books are written in old spanish, which will be very hard for me. i prefer drama and romantic stories.

Lazarus, for me, I am interested in popular books that most Spanish students are required to read in secondary school and high school. Something similar to Mark Twain's "The adventures of Tom Sawyer" here in the States. Something like a household name. Could you recommend me some too?
