Se indicates that the verb is passive. "It was written in 1998"
Lo is an object pronoun. "Juana Serrano wrote it."
It's an easy trap to fall into to think that "se" is either a reflexive pronoun or an indirect object pronoun. There are a lot of other uses for that word. There are lots of old discussion on this forum about "se."
