The word is spelt the same in Spanish "meningitis"

tú has cogido meningitis - a bit blunt I know, but and there are probably a dozen better ways to say it.

Hi porteña
I did say it was spelt the same, not pronounced the same.

If you say that "heetis" thing, you'll sound like the usual English speaker with a horribly strong accent, and many people will even struggle to understand what it is.

Just pronounce it according to the regular rules of Spanish, which are one of the simplest in the world. Easy an simple: mMeningitis. Read one letter at a time.

Gentlemen, Porteña was just trying to be helpful. Not knowing Lisa's level of Spanish, she wanted to be sure that she didn't mispronounce the G as we pronounce it in English. I thought it was useful to mention.

Hey, I wasn't having a go at her, just pointing out that I didn't attempt to pronounce it.

I was also trying to make sure that Lisa didn't mispronounce the word.

Let's just say, if you read the word like in English, it is unrecognisable in Spanish; if you read it like "meninheetis", it will sound horrible, and even hard to recognize for Spanish speakers with little imagination.

Better like this, James?

P.S. Changing the /x/ sound of the Spanish G for a /d'/ of the English G doesn't distort the sound of a word for Spanish speakers as much English vowels do, even with the right consonants, believe me. "Meninyitis", with Spanish vowels, is very easy to understand, but "M@n@nG@t@s", replacing all the Spanish vowels with English ones, makes it sound 100% foreign.
