I don't think única is the right word here. It sounds like "My only family." Remember that "only child" is "hijo único."

I would say "mi familia sin igual" or "sin paralelo." Or "Mi familia no tiene igual." Or "No hay otra como mi familia." Or something similiar, depending on the overall context.

Ok, putting it that way makes a lot more sense. Thanks! I probably would have used "sin igual" (now that I know the meaning of 'igual') but we hadn't covered that in my classes yet!

If you want to say "my family is unique" the most accurate translation would be: "mi familia ES única" because "mi única familia" means my only family. "Only child" means "hijo único" but it's just a way to adapt 2 different languages. The word "único" can be used in different ways for example: "mi única familia" (my only family) único = only / exclusive, or in "your beauty is unique" (tu belleza es única) "mi familia es única" (my family is unique) único = unique / extraordinary. "Mi familia sin igual" or "sin paralelo" is correct too but people almost never use it, "mi familia es única" is the most common way. "única" it is the right word.

Ok... who should I believe? It is REALLY important. I have to talk about my family and what makes it unique!

Believe both of us. There is usually more than one correct translation. Mr. M-S is correct, that if you use ser before único, it means unique (which I should have mentioned). But my suggestions are also correct. But given your level of Spanish, you probably want something that seems closer to the English, so go with M-S's suggestion.

Thanks both of you. You have both been a BIG help. Oh and Mr. Santiago? Don't worry about forgetting to mention the bit about "ser," if everyone was perfect, the world would be a better place than it is now.
