Isn't the use of estar here wrong?

I thought if you were saying something is made from some material ser was used.

It's OK. The verb is "estar" (Está hecho...). For example:
Esta silla está hecha de un material flexible y resistente para que no se rompa.

I'm not sure of the grammatical rule, but there is something to note here. "Está hecho" is in reference to the making of it. It is not necessarily referring to what the contents of the item are. For example you could say "Está hecho con mucho cariño". At the same time, if you want to refer directly to the material that it is made of you can say "Es de material flexible." or "Es de hierro". See what I mean'

Porque en general se usa "ser" con participios verbales cuando se trata de verbos de acción, y "estar" con verbos de resultado, como "hecho".
