Hello, I am just trying to learn Spanish and working with a company in Spain. I get the "idea" of most of it, but I just want to be sure I understand everything fully.

And como should be cómo, and tu should be tú. And Canadá.

OK, that's picky. But still.

Academic? When I was in primary school as a student, no one was allowed to complete it or to go to secondary school with such spelling mistakes.

How often do you see in English people write "I ave no hidea"? (I have no idea)

Just my opinion (and a gripe)

Carelessness in chat rooms and text messaging is destroying people's ability to spell. It's getting so that people don't even try. There is also a philosophy that you'll run into sometimes, in the U.S., that spelling is not important as long as one's ideas are good. It makes it really hard to read what people write sometimes -- ugh!!

I worked with another teacher (she was a high-school science teacher) who was very intelligent, competent, and well-educated, but she couldn't spell. The problem was that she came through the school system at a time and place when teaching phonics and spelling was out of vogue. Thus she was never made to memorize all the spelling lists the rest of us had to learn by heart . . . as you can imagine in English this makes quite a disaster!

I agree with you Natasha. I also agree that a person's spelling ability has nothing to do with their intelligence. Some people just don't ever grasp it, others are phenomenal at spelling. It is definitely difficult for me to translate with spelling mistakes, maybe I should ask him to spell check before he sends it out.

It is understandable in English, but not in Spanish, where the basic spelling rules can be learnt in no time, and once you learn them, you can apply them mathematically to read each word perfectly, as the writting always matches the pronounciation (my wife learnt in one day, and she has no problem reading any single word ever since). There are only a few catches with a few letters, because sometimes you can use more than one different letter to represent the same sound, but it is way easier than in English. Me, and most of my friends and family members would never miss a single word in a spelling contest (that's why we don't have them).

Bad spelling in Spanish is only acceptable if someone never went to school!

WEll, I am a specialist in this: bad typing, all my friends will agree on that.

However, Gina, it is quite unforgivable for a person , as Lazarus said, "who went to school", to make such horrible mistakes. Spanish is much easier to spell than English, horrible language (jejeje)

Anyway, if he is a gifted artist, he will not have to write often, so that saves him. Don't think we are "picking" on your friend, it is simply that we do not understand how a schooled person can write this badly.

In spite of this being a spanish forum, maybe you should publish a few spelling lists here for those who are learning english? I've never seen one either.

I have also wondered about this, why the most intelligent, well educated and eloquent people I know, are also the worst spellers (is that a real word') not to mention their grammar and handwriting.... I used to have it down as sheer laziness (at school "can't be bothered to learn", and later snobbery "I'll never have to write my own correspondence, there's secretaries for that"), but the jury is out on that one these days.

Thank heavens for spell-check! Is what I say (being dyslexic and with a penchant for making both "spellos" and "typos" (typing errors)!!!
