That's an interesting question! The generally accepted theory is that It comes from Latin 'verdis' (green). One of the derivatives of this verdis, verdugo, was used around the 11th century to refer to a green cane or stick from a tree. These canes were used, among other things, to whip people. Around the 13th century, the word was also used to refer to the people in charge of delivering punishments with this cane, as well as carry out death sentences.
This word shares its root with all "verde"-related words in Spanish, and other canes, like verge and virgate, and verdure.
