Someone tried to translate it as 'you put me on an egg' -but then I don't get the 'lo' being involved or what the hell it could mean anyway'

It means "You set me up for that one." That is, you said something that made it easy for the other person to make a joke. You were the straight man. It can also mean, "Hey, you had that one coming."

A huevo just means easy. So, it's literally "You put it to me easy."

Thanks James ..and that accounts for the 'lo' as well.

A huevo is a slang very used in México and although can have multiple meanings, mostly times is for "something imposed by force or obligation".
"Entró a huevo", "Lo hizo a huevo".
