Hi Antae, very true,I think. After all it is spoken by 400 million people!
This is what wiki says:
Hi Antae Tummings
Welcome to the forum
After English, I believe Spanish is spoken in more countries in the world than any other so it must be useful. I love it and would love to become fluent. Unfortunately I only get to use it in holidays, but I will persevere.
Hello Antae,
Allow me to include my own two cents: As Heidita mentioned, it is one of the most commonly spoken languages so it would be of great advantage for one to pick up Spanish as a second language - imagine how many more people one can have a conversation with and reach out to!
Additionally, I personally believe that any second language adds to a person's knowledge and roundness, and perhaps I'm a little biased but Spanish is an excellent choice.
Think about this as well:
1. Spanish will be a gateway language to understanding other Romance languages (ie, Italian, French).
2. You will be surprised to know how much greater your vocabulary bank will become as a result of picking up a second language. After reading a great book in Spanish, I find that my spoken and written English improves as a result (does this happened to anyone else')
3. I find that my knowledge of Spanish helps me spell better in English as well, especially when it comes to some tricky vowels (not true in all cases but definitely in most).
Hope I was able to offer a little more insight.
Antae,
It depends on what you are looking for.
Spanish is a great second language to learn and very useful for traveling. In fact, if you go to countries like Italy or Brazil/Portugal a lot of times they even understand you if you speak in Spanish.
In the United States, Spanish is a growing language that is becoming increasingly more popular and important. It is also very helpful in the business world because there are so many Spanish speakers, and now it is very common for companies to offer services in Spanish.
Nevertheless, in my opinion, the best second language to learn would be Mandarin, especially financially speaking. The Asian markets are growing extremely rapidly, and companies worldwide are licking their lips to get just a small percentage of the 1.5 billion plus market. Additionally, over 1 billion people speak Mandarin.
Spanish is a beautiful language, and I don't regret one minute of the time I spent learning it. However, if you really want to prepare for the future, language-wise, I think Mandarin is the way to go.
I have to disagree with part of what you are saying swally, especially in Italy. We were in Rome two years ago and 99.9% of the people didn't understand Spanish, and believe me, my spoken Spanish is quite good.
Re earlier replies, I think it rather depends on why you want to learn another language. Is it because of wanting to travel? If so, where do you want to go? Because of a special interest? Do you live where there is a spanish speaking community? Is it because of work? To further your career? What are your interests? (eastern culture? latin culture? european')
If you for example want to study medicine or learn more languages maybe latin is a good choice.
I chose german at school (at the time we only had the choice of german and french), my younger sister and brother both chose spanish, but for totally different reasons. My sister in law and best mate both studied french. There are also speakers of thai, arabic, japanese and russian amongst my friends.
But as a wide spread modern language, I say spanish is a good second language to learn.
In a way you answered your own question "if you have a spanish speaking relationship" whether that meant a romantic involvement, relatives or an interest in things latin.
