Chain-gang
The context is an illustration, so what I need to say is "If you were in a chain-gang..." Is that a punishment common to Spanish speaking countries? The concept is back breaking forced labor.
Just so you don't think I'm psycho, I'll be juxtaposing difficult labor with no real purpose and no hope with something like gardening or treasure hunting. Same labor, but the purpose and results are entirely different. Illustrating how hope is a powerful aid in enduring difficulty.

If I have understood your post the sentence could be translated "Si estuvieras haciendo trabajos forzados..". It is not a literal translation, but chain-gang, meaning a group of people chained together as an outside working party, doesn't have an exact word or expresión in Spanish (at least I don't think so).
