Is "hace tres años que he estudiado español" incorrect or awkward? Is the present tense always used when hacer is in the present tense?

I don't know whether it would be awkward to use he estudiado (my own thoughts are that it would not be correct, but you would be better to wait on a native speaker), but I checked with some of my own grammar books, and they seem to imply that the present indicative is the correct tense to go with for these type of constructs (i.e. when describing an action that started in the past and continues into the present).

Hace amount of time que present indicative tense verb.

or

Present Indicative verb tense desde hace amount of time.

Should be "¿Estás aprendiendo inglés?" I believe.

• Or just ¿Aprendes inglés? The continuous form of a verb (-ing in English, -iendo/-ando en Español) becomes adjective like, so tends to require "I am"/"Estoy" and vice versa as with any other adjective. - AnnoLoki Sep 25, 2009

Interesting. I understand how hace in the present tense is translated as "it has been 3 years", but how does that mechanism transfer to estudio to make it I have studied?

I'm not saying that you're wrong as I understand that Spanish uses the present tense for present, past, future, and sometimes conditional tenses. I'm just asking if that is a common method for saying "have xxxxed" with the hace+time periphrasis?

@Gfreed...ya te ves tal fluido es espanol, y como sale de nosotros quien han hablado ella tantos anos. Te he dicho.... Bueno, has visto como una palabra se cambia su forma (presente, pasado, etc) con contexto. Si, se presente en libros en una forma, pero en la vida real, no es verdad. Espanol es un cosa bien fluido. Las palabras cambian su forma. Perece como una cosa, pero la verdad es otra. Hemos hablado tanto en eso, y estoy super bien contento has visto las construcions que existe in espanol de la vida real!
