ASK A QUESTION Have you been to Honduras?
I am looking to chat with someone who is a native of Honduras, or has been there. I am traveling to Naranjal in December. I'd like to know what to expect when I get there. Honduras has a reputation for extreme poverty, but as I look at real estate prices, I find them comparable to US. Is Naranjal very poor? Please tell me what you know. I'd love to see photos.

Hi Kristie, I have never been to Honduras. Let's see if you get some input. I will read it all!
Kristie,
I have only been there once, but I absolutely, absolutely loved it!
I was away from the poorer parts, as we stayed in San Pedro Sula with some relatively wealthier friends, and later went to the Bay Islands where the poverty is not as rampant.
Still, we had a cat jump on our table when we dined in restaurants, so, you know, just be ready to roll with stuff like that ![]()
It is a gorgeous country. In December, nothing ever dries.
It rains all the time, and once our clothes got wet, we hung them up, but that was it, they were wet the whole time. It puts even my native Florida to shame in terms of humidity!
I met there, the most wonderful warm and caring people I've ever known. They helped us with some of our big travel snafus and just made it an absolutely marvelous time!
I wish I had a little more experience in Honduras. My dad's wife is catracha, so in a way, I am Honduran by marriage, lol ![]()
Buen viaje!

Yikes! The wetness scares me. I had not planned to bring too many clothes, only the bare necessities. I wanted to fill my checked bags with things to leave behind. Perhaps, I will rethink bringing more clothing.
I've not planned any tourism at this time. I am going to check out some properties for a future orphanage.
Did you rent a car'
Poverty can be a relative term. How would you describe what you saw? Are you from the US'
Nope, I didn't rent a car because I was with friends. Besides, I'm too chicken to drive in a foreign country!
Personally, if I had to do it all over again (packing wise) I would pack light and carry on what you can. But that might just be the lost luggage talking there, lol.
Maybe your things will dry better than mine. It was a short trip. I didn't mind the wetness at all though because we were just so happy there the whole time that it didn't matter. ![]()

Currently, I am hosting an Honduran mother and daughter in my home. I am a volunteer with Healing the Children, an organization that brings children to the US for medical treatment. For the past few months, I have been immersed in spanish. Although not fluent, I understand quite a bit. This family and my family have agreed to work together to help feed the children in the village of Naranjal. There is central property fo sale in the village that I will be looking into in December. Your prayers would be appreciated. I will consider all advice.
that helps. i'm purchasing travel clothes that are supposed to dry quickly. i've been told San Pedro Sula is gorgeous.
San Pedro Sula is gorgeous! And Honduras is absolutely beautiful in December. The only thing more beautiful is the people! ![]()
I am so happy to hear that you are volunteering as a host family. I work day and night as a recruiter of host families, so it is good to see people like you responding to the need!
