I am talking to an architect about building a 'self-contained apartment' and think there must be something more robust than 'un apartamiento separado'. Also, if there were to be a 'communicating door' between the apartment and the house would it be 'una puerta enlazanda''''''

apartamiento autosuficiente/ independiente

communicating door: puerta de paso

You should explain a little better what you mean by communicating door.

I think it is the same as a connecting door and that would be "una puerta comunicada".
