That certainly depends on the mind-set you have towards learning Spanish
. Setting short term goals is a better recipe for sucess than to say "I'll be fluent by next year". Fluency in a language is without a doubt one of the hardest things someone can accomplish...but it makes it worthwhile.
I think that just like with all things in life, momentum is huge. Once a person experiences small successes in Spanish, it will make studying more fun and enjoyable. Being critical of yourself is a good thing at times, however, too much self-criticism can lead a person into quitting.

If I had a nickel every time I said that....
Well, you're in the right place. Stick around a while and i can guarantee you'll learn something worthtwhile.

Not if you WANT to learn it.
If you HAVE to learn it, then it will be much more difficult.
Like anything, if you enjoy it, it will be easier. Not effortless, but easier because you will enjoy what you are learning.

When I was in México there were zillions of children all over, and blow me down if
they were not all fluent in Spanish , so I figured if those little tykes can speak with
no schooling and in such a short time then I would have no problems , but sadly I did and I am .
Spnish is aweful!
Spanish is perhaps one of the easiest western language to learn, however, it still takes hard work and dedication. It is the 3rd most used language in the world, so it is very useful to know it. In some states, certain professions such as nurse, fireman, paramedic require the workers to know basic Spanish.
The first good news is, Spanish has the most comprehensive on-line learning programs, and some of them, like SD, are free. The second good news is, you can read Spanish novels after 2-4 months, as many English and Spanish words share the same Latin roots. Once you can read interesting books, study Spanish becomes a source of enjoyment rather than a drag.
I am glad that I chose Spanish instead of French or German.
Have fun.
Yes learning a new language is hard and challenging but it is also fun and rewarding. Beside, it is a great way to meet new and interesting people. Hang in there.
