I haven't decided what to do about the forum. The main reason I've been so involved is because of all the helpful, knowledgeable people, especially the native speakers and those so much more advanced than I am who took the time to correct my extremely rusty Spanish. With many of them leaving, and with the sudden lack of moderation, I'm afraid the forum is going to turn into a wasteland of advertising and unruly drive-by's or requests for free translations and homework.

As a professional software engineer with 30 years of experience I would classify the site "upgrade" itself as a disaster that injected uncounted bugs, eliminated or hid many key features, and managed to alienate the majority of the users.

On the other hand, I've been through Internet forum drama before. If I leave will it make the admins change their mind? Will it improve the forum? Will it improve my Spanish?

I think I'm going to take a break for a while and see how things play out.

Kevin,
I can only hope you don't leave the site as well. We've lost so many already and you would be another hit to this forum. Taking a break is fine but please don't stay away too long. We need good people like you. Abrazos amigo

  • Gracias, pana. I'm not leaving in a huff, or even a minute and a huff (sorrry, Marx Brothers fan), but I came to knock the rust off my Spanish, and I stayed because of all the nice people (like you).. - KevinB Feb 13, 2012 flag
  • Now I'm going to back off and see if the admins can fix things or not. - KevinB Feb 13, 2012 flag

I haven't decided eaxctly what I will do yet but It is unlikely that I will spend as much time here as before. I am keeping contact with various native speakers including Heidi and Laura.

It will be interesting to see how the management will deal with the exodus of native speakers! Who will be left to help correct Spanish in the forum?

Maybe after a while they will begin to apprecaite how much work Heidi actually did.?.... Who knows??? I am not holding my breath about that !

It has been said that sometimes you don't appreciate something until you have lost it! One day they may wake up to that reality!

I agree.

I don't like the changes, but I'm not leaving... I'll take a break for awhile, too.

This is basically what I am doing as well. I just want to watch and see but it may result in my leaving. Who knows? With no community moderators, I'm predicting that the forum is going to get very messy with trolls and posts that are impossible to read because somebody didn't pass kindergarten. (I don't want to be rude, but if you look around the internet... Some of it is really bad.) I don't want to leave because this is agreat site, but the question is: What can we really do? I will stay to a wach for a bit, but if things do not improve I won't waste my time forever.

I would advise most to do the same - either stay, or just watch for a while.

I am going to stand back and watch.

My opinions and feelings and suggestions were of no interest to the owners of SD

so I will just become an occasional bystander - great shame though.

SD was like a succesful restaurant or bar - no one can plan such places - they happen because of the people who use them - not only because of who "owns" them.

This is something not understood by the owners of SD.

Chau for now.

  • How true. The instigators are just too young to know how rarely such a community miracle occurs, and so took it for granted. - territurtle Feb 14, 2012 flag
