Just need a little more help about the imperfect tense related to childhood. Any help is appreciated !

Cuando era joven mi mamá me dijo que yo era tan bello.

That was a running tag line when I was in high school in Caracas. I think it was a line from a T V show. Sorry. Your title brought back a lot of memories.

What help do you need?
