Okay so here are the "rules" of my monthly thread. Each month take a photo of something in your world; a place or a thing - preferably something that changes over time. Don't stress too much about the "changing-over-time" thing- random photos are always welcome! However my friends - and pay attention to this - it must be a photo you (or your family) have taken, not a downloaded net photo . And please - no photos of people unless they happen to be strangers "milling-around" in the background. Are photos of animals allowed? Yes!

So, to recap, if you are able, pick somewhere, or something, you can re-visit throughout the year. It can be a landscape; a streetscape; a cityscape; perhaps renovations that are taking place somewhere in your "world"; perhaps a favourite tree that changes colour - anything really. As each new month arrives I will create a new (photo) thread . We can re-post old photos alongside the "new" ones - just to see how things have changed in our corners of the world. This is just a suggestion - not essential to the monthly photo thread.

So how many photos can you post each month? A maximum of four- including any re-posted photos . Now here's the tricky bit for you my friends. You have three options to choose from....

*Post four new pictures

*Post a combination of "old" and "new". But don't forget to tell us which is the "old" and which is the "new".

If you're desperate to post only new pictures but still want people to "compare" with the old; post a hyperlink to your "previous" pictures. If you're unsure how to do this send me a PM and I'll organise that for you.

And now the "lay of the land" re posting comments. You must post at least one sentence in Spanish and English - maximum of three sentences, per post. And as with other threads on the site - no translators to be used! Heidita has kindly agreed to moderate the Spanish in this thread - so please re-visit your posts and edit any corrections made by Heidita.

I tried to put my February pictures on the opening page but it looks too much like a mad woman's breakfast - so keep reading my friends!

Some of the most unusual plants in the world are to be found in Australia. Many native plants have evolved unusual shapes and characteristics to cope with one of the harshest climates on our planet. Banksias are especially tough and hardy and can even survive bushfires. I found these Banksia flowers and seedpod when I was out walking last Saturday.

The top two "flowers" are from a Banksia serrata tree, very common in our sclerophyll bushland; the lower one Banksia ericifolia (Giant Candles) and the bottom picture is the "fruit" or "follicle" containing the seeds. And Banksias are from the "family" Proteaceae.

  • And I must say, this is my first thread posting on the revamped SD - despite the font being a bit on the skimpy side - it presents well.... - nonombre Feb 4, 2012 flag
  • Thanks for posting these Banksia plants. We have nothing like this in Illinois. (that I know of) - bandit51jd Feb 4, 2012 flag

The first photograph shows a portion of the Sangamon River.

Because the path was muddy I was able to get a pretty good photograph of a deer´s hoof print (lower left) and dog´s paw print (upper right).

- bandit51jd Feb 6, 2012 flag
  • Yes, it is in Central Illinois and called Homer Lake Forest Preserve. - bandit51jd Feb 6, 2012 flag
  • Corrections to my Spanish comment to Annie is appreciated! - bandit51jd Feb 6, 2012 flag

Each February, the city of Chicago gets alot of snow. But this year we have been blessed with beautiful weather (for the most part). There is no snow on the ground, but I have this feeling that we might get alot of snow in the days to come. I hope that it's not like last year! (We had a blizzard.)
