which one is correct: el televisor o la televisión? and if they are both correct which one is more commonly used?

Both are correct.

EL TELEVISOR: you speak about the device: 'Deme el televisor' (Buy); 'El televisor está dañado" (broke); "El televisor es rojo" (Red)

LA TELEVISIÓN: when you don't speak about the device: 'Los programas de la televisión son aburridos'; (programas) 'Miré la televisión toda la noche' (see)

BUT... This is true in most cases but not always

If you are asking if both are correct referring to the TV set itself, yes. Google televisores baratos or televisiones baratas and you will find TV's for sale. Or you could google something like televisor pantalla plana or televisión pantalla plana and see that they are both used.

Not being a native, I couldn't comment on which is more common.

The television industry/broadcast is la televisión.

la televisión.
