lejos can be an adverb, adjective or noun.
Lejos = far away, long ago Lejanos - distant, remote, far
So it seems there is some overlap and each may be appropriate or inappropriate depending on the intention of the sentence.

Different parts of Speech Lejano is an adjective lejos is adverb.

La ciudad lejano. The far away city (distant)
La ciudad que está lejos. Same thing but it sure is easier to say with lejano huh?
