Everybody invited!!

This is our "Palacio Real" de Madrid. The palace used to have statues of the former Kings of Spain distrubuted on top of the facade and on some "salientes" as shown in one of the pictures. Almost all of them were removed some time ago and you can see them now in our beautiful parks and in front of the palace.

Why were they removed? wink

Porque querían que la gente normal viera a los reyes en su vida cotidiana.

  • That might be true , rabbit. I vote for you, anyway, it sounds more likely, it's always nice to meet a king on your way to work. - annierats Jan 22, 2012 flag

Because, according to research, some of the kings suffered from vertigo.

Although I've visited the palace, and although I'm Spanish, I have to admit that I don't have any idea about it. But I'll try to guess. Perhaps it was very difficult to clean the statues in their original location, so they decided to put them on the ground to keep them close at hand.

  • Cordobesa, here in the US we would be more likely to say "I have to admit that I don't... or if youwant to use "recognise" go with "recognise the fact that...(your "than" is a typo I think) - Yeser007 Jan 22, 2012 flag
  • Oh! Yes, I wanted to write "recognise that", but now, I like more as you said "I have to admit that". Thanks, Yeser :) - Cordobesa Jan 22, 2012 flag
  • Cordo, puedes corregir tu post según se sugiere tú misma:) - Heidita Jan 22, 2012 flag
  • well, this is a great idea too, however, it has nothing to do with cleaning, cold...freeeeeeeezing cold, jeje - Heidita Jan 22, 2012 flag

A los españoles no les gustan las estatuas tan antiguas, prefieren algo más moderno, algo parecido a esta estatua de un exhibicn en la catedral de Salisbury.

salisbury cathedral, new look

Porque las estatuas se aburrieron con su vista vieja. Todo el mundo necesita un cambio a veces.

Maybe some of these statues were tired of being covered by the excrement of the doves so they talked with the Mayor and asked him if they could take a shower first of all and then be on the ground. The Mayor accepted in exchange for some social work for the community....

  • Yes, It could be a good reason, Raúl :) - Cordobesa Jan 22, 2012 flag
  • We really only say doves about white pidgeons, though really they're the same. Excrement is uncountable. You don't use "for" with verbs. - rabbitwho Jan 22, 2012 flag
  • I don't know how to do the "strike out", help anyone? Good work Raul :) - rabbitwho Jan 22, 2012 flag
  • thanks for the correction, raúl, this was already mentioned, and no, doves or birds had nothing to do with it;) - Heidita Jan 22, 2012 flag
  • Esto no es una correción. Solo quiero decir que solemos decir "community service" en vez de "social work for the community"...especialmente con referencia a condenas. Por ejemplo: He was sentenced to three months of community service. - webdunce Jan 23, 2012 flag
