ASK A QUESTION Hace + Time period + ?

Or, if you are asking how to answer a question such as, "When did you start studying Spanish?":
Hace dos años.
Two years ago.
Literally: It makes two years.
I learned from Señor Jordan's website that you can say "Hace cinco años que estudio español" using the present tense, and that this means "I've been studying Spanish for five years" (and I am still studying it). Maybe a native speaker could tell us more about this?
I don't completely understand what you are trying to say, but you would only use hace + time period if you were trying to say how many years it's been since you studied Spanish. For example, "Hace cinco años desde estudié español." (It's been five years since I studied Spanish.) If you want to say how long you have been studying Spanish (because you still are), then you would say, "He estudiado español por cinco años." (I've studied Spanish for five years.) I hope this helps!
