We brought him (I guess).

Is it traerse always when you bring a person along, and it's llevar (no se) when you take a person somewhere, but with traer does one always need se, and if not, why would they use se here? Why use se sometimes and not other times? Gracias.

The "se" is a constant source of confusion. In this case it could mean something like "we took him with us" (as in brought), but more context would be helpful.
