This was said by an argentinian - please can someone explain.

  • Thanks for the replies. I think what was meant was take care of your eyes with all the girls ( to look at) but I could be wrong... - Julie Aug 7, 2011 flag

Are you sure that the word was not gafas (anteojos)? [del sol o oscuras]

Was he selling sun glasses? Were you shading your eyes?

Take care of your eyes with (sun) glasses.

cuídate los ojos con las gafas.

  • nice - amazing what difference one letter makes :) btw a typo were not we're :) - Kiwi_Girl Aug 7, 2011 flag

First of all, Cuidate, with no tilde is a 'voseo' (the way that Argentinians speak).

'Gata' is often referred to girls of bad reputation.

So, your sentence could be:

Cuidate loco, ojo con las gatas. -- Take care dude, be aware of mean girls

That's the gist, hope you can understand it, I'm sure that a 'rioplatense' would explain it better.

  • I'm not sure about 'mean girl'... And, please correct my English. - nelson_rafae Aug 7, 2011 flag
  • Girls of ill repute', or "hookers", might be better than "mean girls", which is different. Also, beware is a little better than "be aware". Beware connotes being aware of danger or a dangerous situation. - Jeremias Aug 7, 2011 flag
  • Mean girls isn't right, but the word I would use probably isn't permitted on the forum. - lorenzo9 Aug 7, 2011 flag

Are you sure it wasn't 'cuídate'? - take care of yourself for the first part smile

For the last part I would just guess that the person spoken to was being watched by a girl - hence gata - but that is a total guess lol.

  • Do you think he meant chicks by gatas? That seems odd to me, I was thinking like maybe the dude had a bunch of cats, curious. - jeezzle Aug 6, 2011 flag
  • yes that is what i was thinking but as I said - total guess, no rhyme nor reason really lol :) Hopefully someone will come along soon and know if it's a saying or not - Kiwi_Girl Aug 6, 2011 flag
