Since I want these threads to be all about learning, I would like to share some info about the creature (gorgon) depicted in the Imagen del día:

De acuerdo a la mitología griega,las gorgonas eran tres deidades, hijas de dos monstruos marinos: Forcis y Cetus. (Tenían por hermanas a otro trío de diosas infernales: las grayas, tres brujas caníbales que compartían un ojo y un diente.) Los nombres de las tres gorgonas eran Esteno, Euríale y Medusa. Existen muchas descripciones, pero siempre se las imagina con serpientes en lugar de cabellos y con el poder de convertir en piedra a todo aquel que las mirase.

Medusa fue la más célebre de todas; Poseidón, dios olímpico del mar, la ultrajó en el templo de Atenea, la diosa de la sabiduría; por dicha ofensa, Atenea la transformó a ella y a sus hermanas en los monstruos antes descritos. Segun los relatos, las hermanas no eran monstruosas al nacer, de hecho, contrario a las grayas, las gorgonas poseían gran belleza física. Medusa, quien era la única mortal de las tres hermanas, murió decapitada en manos del semi-dios Perseo, hijo de Zeus, quien recibió la ayuda de Atenea para realizar el viaje en el cual él habría de matar a la gorgona.

En el mito original, las gorgonas son descritas como seres alados y con garras en vez de extremidades, además de tener sus cabezas cubiertas de serpientes; en versiones modernas son mujeres hermosas y "normales", con la excepción de los reptiles en la cabeza.

Dicen que si se mira en a los ojos de Medusa uno se convertirán a en piedra. Tendría que ser estar drogado para verla mirala en todo caso. They say if one looks in the eyes of Medusa they will turn to stone. I would have to be stoned to look at her in any case.
