ASK A QUESTION Paralelamente
Hello I want to use a connector between two sentences. In spanish I would use paralelamente but a quick search suggests me that parallelly does not exist in English.
My first approach would be on the other hand, but in my perception it indicates a sort of opposition and is not the idea I want to give.
A simplified version of what I want to say is:
X was studying the subject A. Parallely, subject B was being developed by Y. Surprisingly, they discover the two subjects were related.

Does it have to be one word?
In a parallel study conducted by Y subject B was being developed.
I think this is a meaningless statement, however, because parallel here tells us little, if anything.
At the same time a study conducted by Y along similar lines lead to the development of subject B.
I've seen it used this way:
X was studying the subject A. In parallel, subject B was being developed by Y. Surprisingly, they discover the two subjects were related.
Simultaneously is a good one. You could also use "at the same time" or "meanwhile."
Sally was studying the history of religion. At the same time, George was studying anthropology. Surprisingly, they discovered the two subjects were related.
