I'm wanting to say

I found your number and I thought I'd give you a call
or I thought I'd say hi.

all I have so far is

encontré tu numero y pense que te llamaria
y pense en mandarte saludos

Do those make sense? I know that's sort of a direct translation, but I can't figure out another way to phrase that in english so that I could traslate el sentido del frase, rather than las palabras de él.

Your translation looks basically OK to me (Encontré tu número y pensé que te llamaría), but there are probably a number of ways a native speaker might express this idea differently. Those might include:

Encontré tu número y me dio ganas de llamarte.
Encontré tu número y se me ocurrió llamarte.
Encontré tu número y decidí llamarte.
etc.

pense en mandarte saludos

I might say "Pensé que podría saludarte" for this one.
