Carlos, the difference in the two will tell you which to use.
Estar is used ithe temporary, ser in the fixed or permanent sense. Example: Yo soy hombre. (ser) Yo estaba infermo (estar) I hope this helps=Jerry

Don't get your verbs mixed up.
Fue is from the verb ir = to go
The easiest way that I can remember is that ser is for a permanent condition and estar is for location or a temporary condition.

fue is also from the verb ser = to be. Third person singular preterite past definite)

el tiene razón porque el preterito de ser es fui fuiste fue fuimos fuisteis fueron
también el verbo Ir en el preterito se usa las formas mismas fui fuiste fue fuimos fuisteis fueron

Se usa ser con rasgos fisícas personalidad professión la hora characteristicas
las cosas concretas.

Se usa estar con localidad senitmientos salud cosas que cambian

yo les digo a mis estudiantes que ser es como la montana (algo concreto)
y estar es como la nube ( cada vez cambiando)

Hi Sally
The past definite of ser and ir being the same completely confuses me sometimes. I am thinking it is "what someone was" and its "where someone went". from then on, the story line gets very confusing.

Actually, until now I had never really thought about this and I spent some time yesterday going over it in my mind and thinking of examples. I get it but can't explain it. Definitely confusing!
