I think it's insane to think that an abbreviation in all caps is 'shouting' and it's very irritating to try and figure out formatting tricks to type something with more than 1 capital letter. The rule doesn't say that you can't use all caps, it says it 'should be avoided'. Using an abbreviation is not 'incorrect language'. I understand the purpose of the rule, I don't understand why someone can't write 3 lines of code and 'fix' the problem.

  • We find abreviations in dictionaries...why not here? It is very helpfull and should be included in the phrase book for reference.... Thanks for your help! - marilo63 May 3, 2011 flag
  • Okay, Jack I foudn out that we can enter abreviations if we separate de letters.... Good enough for me! - marilo63 May 3, 2011 flag

HI Marilo, using all caps is considered shouting, please check the rules of this sitewink

  1. Use correct language

Students come here to learn: correct capitalization, grammar, spelling, pronunciation, and punctuation. Chatspeak (lol, cu 2mrow) is not allowed unless as a topic of discussion. The use of ALL CAPITAL LETTERS should also be avoided as it is considered shouting and is very rude.

  • But this site is also used a a reference for many business and people. I do understand your point! - marilo63 May 3, 2011 flag

The site considers all caps shouting and rude therefore it won't allow it. You can space them and it will work. There are also other formatting tricks I've seen done but I can't tell you how.

  • Thanks. I just do not know how to enter abreviations that could be helpfull in the phrase book also to everyone that uses Spanishdict as a reference because it is quick and efficient. I recommend it to all business all the time! - marilo63 May 3, 2011 flag

Yes, unfortunately, whoever wrote the software filter that was intended to prevent writing words/sentences entirely in uppercase (the internet equivalent of shouting) was not clever enough to avoid objecting to normal abbreviations. It would not be difficult to provide a list of common abbreviations that would be accepted (exempt from the capitalization filter) but it is, apparently, beyond the capacity of whoever wrote the filter (or, maybe, it's just that he doesn't care about doing the job properly).

  • So...through all this I just learn that we are now having some e-net ettiquete..I had no idea! But it is good to know (for someone with bad eyes...that it is "shouting" in e-net. We never stop learning do we? - marilo63 May 3, 2011 flag

We do not think is it "insane" at all- Using all caps is considered shouting all over the web, on all forums I know caps are not allowed.

Abbreviations can be used seperating the letters.

  • Okay. Got it! separate letters for abreviations...thanks! - marilo63 May 3, 2011 flag

it says it 'should be avoided'.

It is not allowed, Jack, the code on this forum does actually N O T allow it , as you very well know.

However, I am surprised at what kind of things people find "irritating"....interesting.

I would like to remind you and all members that this is a free sitewink

  • You are right Heidita, it is a free site but we all participate and make it better. it wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for many of us who loves the site enough to care and participate. So thanks so much for the person or persons that makes it possible - marilo63 May 3, 2011 flag

As I have seen that some people do not understand "should be avoided" as "this is considered rude", I have changed the rule appropriately.

I hope, Jack and Marilo, it is clearer nowwink

Well, I suggest you take your complaint to...hmmm...let's see...the ENTIRE e-world because it's a standard of etiquette that's used globally.

...it's very irritating to try and figure out formatting tricks to type something with more than 1 capital letter.

Wow...how often do you actually need abbreviations in a post? As Marilo says: "Okay, Jack I foudn out that we can enter abreviations if we separate de letters.... Good enough for me!"

The rule doesn't say that you can't use all caps, it says it 'should be avoided'.

You can't be serious. If a road sign said "Washed out bridge should be avoided" would you argue with the language or just heed the sign? Some of the rules/guidelines are written in a bit softer language than others....instead of "Don't do this!" it's nice to see "Please avoid this."

I don't understand why someone can't write 3 lines of code and 'fix' the problem.

You can certainly write to Chris and volunteer you computer skills and time. I bet he'd be thrilled to have a new tech man on board.

I would agree that this is a problem with the filter that should be corrected. I mean really since when is typing USA considered shouting or unacceptable... But one of the very few complaints on a very good free site

I think you have just proven that USA can be written on this and on any site without a problem.wink

In any case, this is not open to discussion as this forms part of the rules and coding of this site.

Thanks.
