A lot!!
Believe me, if you want to learn English fast you have to use it a lot, you don't have to be surrounded by people who speak English, but you might start by teaching yourself how to think in English! I never had a conversation with an English native before that lasted for more than 3 minutes, but I'm a pretty good English writer and I think if I had the chance to speak with an English native, there won't be much problems.
(I've been learning English for 3 years and I'm an intermediate student)
Good luck ![]()
Depends on how well you want to speak it. I saw a student get from beginner to CAE (C1) level in 4 years without living in the country. She studied incredibly hard.
In my experience the difference between how fast people learn is not their age or their experience with learning languages etc. but simply how hard they work and how much they practise.

I tutor English as a second language. It takes a lot of work to learn English, but the more you use it, the faster you learn. Watch the news in English, read in English, speak in English every chance you get. When you make mistakes, don't be embarrassed but take the opportunity to learn from them. And if you don't understand something, ask a native speaker.
I want to know, how much longer until I will be able to speak Spanish fluently?
- Thank you and to speak spanish, I suppose is your same answer - erickbioos Apr 2, 2011 flag
- I consider my fluency in English advanced but still learn new words daily...obviously there is a difference between fluency, specifically, and a heavy vocabulary, but the same goes for my poor grasp of Spanish... I ask for help all the time! :) - cristalino Apr 2, 2011 flag
- I really liked your answer lol. I will do this because i also want to become fluent in spanish (i mostly want to be able to understand it but knowing how to speak it is very useful too - el_jefe Apr 2, 2011 flag
