I need this to be something informal, but not mean-spirited. Just something that I could say to my friends when they are too upset over something small.

What's this? Foul language at SD day today?

I personally like that word very much, but it's not allowed in here. See George Carlin's Seven Words You Can't Say on TV - neither can you say them here.

Anyway, as to your question, there are all sorts of harmless slang ways to say that in Spanish:

"¡Tranquila!"

"¡Cálmate, no se te vaya a caer el pelo!"...

I'm sure someone will contribute a few more. grin

A couple of sayings that I like are:

"No te ahogues en un vaso de agua"-- don't drown yourself in a glass of water.

"No te angusties por pequeñeces"--don't sweat the small stuff.

Another one is "¡No te mortifiques!"

This is Spanglish slang, but one of the funniest expressions I heard in Madrid was when someone was flipping out, they were described as "esta flipiando."

So...

No necesitas estar flipiando sobre aquella.

You don't need to be flipping out over that.

A native Spanish-speaker can confirm if my sentence makes sense in Spanish. As always, I'm open to corrections.

I think we should be able to say all the bad words on this site. They could have their own category. Bad words, regardless of how offensive they are, are frequently used in most cultures and are a very important building block of one's full understanding of a language.

  • You are entitled to your opinion, but I don't agree. However, you can start your own Spanish-learning site that includes salty language. - JoyceM Mar 18, 2011 flag
  • SD is a site that it meant to be appropriate for everyone learning spanish, which mean youngster too. That is why foul language is not allowed, and I appreciate that rule immensly, because otherwise things at this community would change a lot! :) - djames01 Mar 18, 2011 flag
  • Oh and it is not neccesarily a bad thing to be ignorant of bad language and I don't think one has to know the foul lingo to understand the language. - djames01 Mar 18, 2011 flag
  • Sorry, Beatrice. Although I tend to agree with you, the matter has been discussed plenty of times and the conclussion has always been: this is a G-rated site, no foul language allowed. - Gekkosan Mar 19, 2011 flag
  • The request has been seriously submitted several times to the site admistrators to open up an adult-only section, and it has always been turned down. So, those who wish to stay, must abide by the rules. - Gekkosan Mar 19, 2011 flag
