In spain, fijate would have the same context as "mira." sabes is like "you know?"

We like "fijate" My wife uses it on me regularly. the essence is "pay attention, fix it in your mind.

On one Mexican radio program I listen to, the female host says "¡Fijate!" to express negative astonishment at something. I think it's kind of like blurting out "Oh my gosh! Can you imagine!" when you hear that someone did something ridiculous.
