I know that "Ella es viuda (she is a widow)" is correct. But my Spanish teacher had told me that Ella está viuda is also correct.

I am quite confused. Could someone please explain this. Any help would be appreciated.

ella está viuda=she is widowed. (adjective)

ella es viuda=she is a widow (noun)

"ella está viuda" is used only if it is something recent, i think

hi friend,

as our friend, gfreed, noted, it is important to see if the word is used as an adjective or as a noun. you know, "estar" can not be used with noun. so the viuda after "ser"=es, is a noun.
